Corporate Social Responsibility

As one of the biggest law firms in the area, Hegarty Solicitors is an integral part of the local community in both Peterborough, where we established our first premises back in 1974, and in Stamford where we’ve had an office since 1979.  We take our corporate social responsibility very seriously.  We are committed to making a positive impact on the community we work in, to reducing our carbon footprint, and to providing a working environment that embraces equal opportunities and diversity.

Each year our staff select a number of different charities to support. In 2013 these were Children in Need, Red Nose Day, Little Miracles and MacMillan Cancer Support and in 2014 we raised funds for Children in Need and Sport Relief and our local nominated charity was Thorpe Hall Hospice. As this was our 40th anniversary year the firm undertook to raise £10,000 for Thorpe Hall and we are proud to have doubled this target! For more information about the fundraising activities for Thorpe Hall please visit our Life Begins at 40 page. Our local nominated charity for 2015 was the Peterborough & Stamford Hospitals Oncology/Haematology Ward which is funded by the registered charity  ‘Peterborough & Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (charity number 1050601)’. This is based at Peterborough City Hospital and is responsible for the treatment, care and support of local cancer patients. In 2016 our staff elected to raise funds for Magpas, a rapid response medical care charity staffed primarily by volunteers. Magpas operates a helicopter and BMW staffed by Doctors and paramedics who are despatched to life threatening illness or medical trauma within East England. In 2017 we raised £1268 for Anna's Hope, the leading children's brain tumour charity in the East Of England. who are committed to giving hope to children and young people diagnosed with a brain tumour.
This year our nominated charity is For Rutland In Rutland. For Rutland raises funds to pay for specialist advisers, who provide free, confidential, independent, non medical advice to people of all ages, who are living with long term conditions in Rutland and the surrounding area.

Community Involvement

In recent years we have sponsored a number of local sports clubs including the Stamford & District Indoor Bowls Association, Peterborough & District Indoor Bowls Centre, Peterborough Cricket Club Ladies and Junior teams, and the Hampton U7s football club.

We are corporate sponsors of the City of Peterborough Symphony Orchestra, the Bourne Grammar School PTFA race night and Peterborough Young Professionals; and we are Peterborough Cathedral Corporate Partners.  Finally, each year we sponsor the Stamford Mercury Business Awards Best New Start Up category - supporting the hard work of local entrepreneurs.

In 2012 we provided Wills free of charge in return for a donation to charity to support Will Aid and we supported Family Dispute Resolution Week by offering free telephone meetings with a fully qualified solicitor.

We also run a number of free seminars and events each year.  Recent events have included Employment Law, Cyber Security and Business Law seminars.

Hegarty Solicitors is a member of the Peterborough and District Law Society.

We are committed to supporting and developing future generations, and have close relationships with many local schools and colleges.  Partners and staff act as mentors for students via the Careers Academy for the Ken Stimpson Community School  and we sponsor an annual student award at the Peterborough Regional College Excellence in Skills Awards. The Hegarty Law Prize is awarded to the best student each year at The King’s School in Peterborough and each year we are proud to sponsor the Sir Harry Smith Community College Award for outstanding academic achievement.

Of course, you can’t beat hands on experience, so we also offer a number of work experience placements and training contracts – see our recruitment  section for more information.

Environmental Policy

At Hegarty Solicitors we are committed to providing a quality service in a manner that ensures a safe and healthy workplace for our employees, clients and suppliers whilst minimising our potential impact on the environment. We passionately believe that even the smallest changes can make a big difference.

The introduction and implementation of this policy is a commitment by the Partners of Hegarty LLP to collaborate with our staff, clients, suppliers and neighbours to reduce our environmental impact.

We have identified the following key environmental impacts associated with the provision of legal services:

  • Waste disposal and recyceling
  • Consumption of energy, water and other resources
  • Production, management and disposal of correspondence and paper files
  • Consumption of paper
  • Consumption of printer cartridges
  • Travel to, from and between our offices and visits to clients, court and conferences

The company is committed to reducing these and other impacts and to the continual improvement of our environmental performance in relation to each location in which we operate. We will do this by:

  • Meeting and where possible exceeding all environmental regulations relevant to our organisation and its activities
  • Increasing cost-effectiveness by recording and reducing our consumption of energy and raw materials
  • Reducing our carbon footprint both locally and in the wider environment
  • Setting targets for measurable annual improvements
  • Making our progress available for independent assessment
  • Sourcing sustainable goods
  • Encouraging our staff to participate and offer suggestions on how we may improve our performance

By making the business greener, more efficient and achieving cost effectiveness, the intention would be to release funds back into the firm for investment in the business and in our staff.

It is the responsibility of all employees, visitors and contractors to fully support this policy through active participation and co-operation.

This environmental policy will be displayed at all times and is openly available to all members of the public via our website.

The planning, implementation, monitoring, annual review and continuous improvement of this policy is formally assigned to the Office Manager.
