Q. I recently used another solicitor to handle my divorce – however the final bill they have given me is much higher than the original quote.  What can I do?

A. If you are dissatisfied with either the service or the bill, the first thing to do is to make a complaint directly to your solicitor.  Do not be scared to challenge or complain, the majority of lawyers want to do a good job and will want to try to put it right.  All firms must have a written complaints procedure, and will tell you who to contact if you have a problem.  If you do make a complaint, be clear about what you think has gone wrong, and what you want done to resolve it.

If you are still not happy with the outcome, you can address your complaint to the Legal Ombudsman.  If the Legal Ombudsman agrees that your solicitor’s service has been unsatisfactory, they can ask them to carry out a number of actions including giving you a formal apology, refunding or reducing legal costs or paying you compensation.
