On Sunday 3rd September, the Deepings community will come together once again to enjoy The Deepings Lions’ ‘World Famous’ Duck Race.
The main event will see up to 3,000 individually sponsored rubber ducks released into the river Welland and speed to the finish line in this year’s specially named Hegarty Championship Cup race.
‘Lucky’, a giant 20ft tall duck and the official event mascot, sponsored this year by Hegarty Solicitors, will preside over the day and provide photo opportunities for visitors and their families.
Members of the public can sponsor a duck for £1 in advance of the event by contacting the Deepings Lions Club, and last-minute sponsorship will also be available on the day from the Deepings Lions stall, near the weir and The Bell pub. The first, second and third ducks in the main race will secure a cash prize for their sponsors.
This year will also see 21 new larger ducks released in three additional sponsored races for an additional sponsorship fee. All funds raised from the event will go to South Lincs Dementia Support and Alzheimer’s Research.
As well as the three sponsored races and the main Hegarty Championship Cup race, there will be fairground rides, entertainment and various stalls for visitors to enjoy. There will also be an ‘Estate Agent’s Dash’, a ‘Shop’s Derby’, ‘Publican’s Chase’, and a Punch and Judy show, all taking place before the main duck race at 2:30pm.
The winners of the Hegarty Championship Cup will be announced at 4pm.
Dave Turner, Deepings Lions Club President said, “We’re all very much looking forward to the Duck Race and are extremely grateful to Hegarty for its sponsorship this year. It’s sure to be a fantastic day for all the family.”
Sean Rowcliffe, partner at the firm, said “The Deepings Lions ‘World Famous’ Duck Race creates such a great local buzz that we just had to get involved. We’re delighted to be supporting the community and this special event with our sponsorship this year. The event is raising funds for two wonderful charities. The Deepings Lions team and volunteers are doing a fantastic job organising everything in the run up to the big day.”
Members of Peterborough Canoe Club and other volunteer canoeists will take to the water to help guide the ducks downstream. Stewards from The Deepings Raft Race, Deeping United FC and The Deepings Rotary Club will also be on hand to support on the day.
The Deepings Lions have been fundraising for 30 years in and around The Deepings and the surrounding villages and have raised over £250,000 for local good causes and international campaigns.
