In 2018, Emily Ellerby-Calladine started working at Hegarty Solicitors as a legal secretary within our employment law department. Three years later, Emily has started her period of recognised training to qualify as a solicitor within the Commercial Property department. We interviewed Emily to find out more about her career journey and what it is like to work at Hegarty Solicitors.
Tell us about your academic background
I graduated from the Open University in 2018 with an undergraduate degree in Law. I then attended BPP University and undertook a master’s degree in conjunction with the Legal Practice Course (LPC) which I completed in July 2021. Studying the LPC has enhanced my legal knowledge as the course covers multiple areas of law, and this has proven to be useful in practice whilst working in different departments across the firm.
What made you want to pursue a career in law?
Before my grandma retired, she was a magistrate. Throughout my childhood, I would often listen to the various tales she would tell me about her career which left me with an avid interest in the intricacies of our legal system even from a young age.
What is it like working at Hegarty Solicitors?
Despite the fast-paced nature of our offices, everyone has always gone out of their way to make me feel welcome and provide support where needed. I also find there is a great work-life balance which is often not the case in this line of work.
The partners really care about their staff and are always finding ways to make Hegarty a fun place to work. We have a staff summer social event and a Christmas party that I enjoy attending each year.
What does a normal working day look like for you?
We hold regular department meetings in the mornings to discuss how we can assist each other on current client cases. These meetings are a useful way for each team member to provide their input and offer a new perspective on each of our live files, ensuring that clients benefit from a wealth of experience spanning the entire department.
Commercial property is a diverse area of law, so no two days are the same in this department. My responsibilities will vary each day depending on the needs of our clients. I will respond to new and existing clients’ queries. This is done daily to ensure I am always available to answer client queries and provide updates on the progress of their transactions.
During my time in the Commercial Property department, I have worked on various transactions such as:
- Land Registry Applications
- Acting for Developers
- Lease work
- Agricultural work
What parts of your job do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy seeing matters through from start to finish and it is very rewarding when we are able to achieve the desired outcome for our clients.
As a trainee solicitor, I have been given a lot of responsibility and hands-on experience in my role. I am also trusted to do chargeable work that contributes to the overall work we do on client files. In addition, we have a great team spirit in the department, which helps make Hegarty an enjoyable place to work.
The firm also recognises and rewards those who are hardworking, which helps motivate me to work hard and offer an excellent service to our clients.
What would you say is your biggest achievement in your career so far?
When I first started working for Hegarty Solicitors I was a Legal Secretary within the employment law department. I then worked as a paralegal in both our Corporate and Commercial Property departments. I am proud of the progress I have made over the years, and I look forward to becoming a qualified solicitor after completing my training course.
“I would thoroughly recommend Emily to anyone as she was a pleasure to deal with.”
