Martin Newton is a solicitor in the Criminal Law Department and joined the firm in 2017, having practised in the area for over 20 years.
Martin qualified in 1993 having completed his Law Degree at University in Manchester and his Law Society Finals at The College of Law in York where he was awarded honours, finishing in the top 5% of his year.
Specialising in Criminal Law since his qualification, Martin was one of the first solicitors in the country to obtain higher rights of audience allowing him to appear in all of the Criminal Courts.
Martin has regularly been recognised by organisations such as The Legal 500 for his work and by clients for his caring and dedicated approach to their case.
Martin has appeared in many high profile cases including acting for clients accused of murder, serial rape and conspiracy to import drugs amongst others. Some of Martins cases have appeared in documentaries and have included an important legal argument in the court of appeal including one case, the definition of consent in rape, and that of violent disorder following a client’s acquittal for the related murder.
As well as previously running the local duty solicitor scheme, Martin has been a representative on several criminal justice groups and initiatives and has been a Criminal Law publications reviewer for a major legal publishing company.
